Formatting

Article submissions should be 800-1000 words, and articles should follow these formatting guidelines:

  • New Times Roman (12 point)
  • Left Justified
  • Single spaced
  • Margins set to 0/0
  • One carriage return between each paragraph, which should consist of 2-4 sentences.
  • All sources should be included as in-text links.
  • Do not use first person unless you were present for the events you describe.

Getting Published

First, do not send us an article that is under consideration elsewhere. Second, open your article with a compelling hook, which can be a personal anecdote, provocative question, counterintuitive fact, or tie to an upcoming event. You must catch the reader’s attention in that first sentence. Third, lay out the problem in the first two paragraphs, which are 2-4 sentences each. Remember, you are writing for the public, not for a graduate school class. Fourth, make three to five arguments using clear language—avoiding passive voice (have been, has had, etc…).

Make sure you have someone else read your work and offer you feedback before you send it to GSR. Also make sure you copy edit the article.

Please send all submissions to alowther@thinkdeterrence.com with the email title “Submission.” We will generally respond within 72 hours.

In your email, please include a brief bio highlighting your credentials. Please include the article as an MS Word attachment. While we do not provide financial compensation, we offer exposure for your written work.
