<p><span data-contrast="auto">For decades, the global nonproliferation regime, anchored by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a web of bilateral and multilateral agreements, has sought to limit the spread of nuclear weapons and reduce the risks of nuclear conflict. Yet the conflict in Iran has exposed structural weaknesses in this regime, challenged long-standing assumptions about deterrence and diplomacy, and risked additional proliferation pressures in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive regions.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">Iran’s nuclear program has been at the center of international diplomacy for many years. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), negotiated by the P5+1 countries in 2015, demonstrated that sustained negotiation could address nuclear activities through verification, inducements, and incentives. Its unraveling, however, weakened the credibility of diplomatic agreements and signaled to states worldwide that nuclear deals may be vulnerable to political shifts.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Current and historical animosities over a variety of issues have deepened skepticism about the effectiveness of multilateral agreements in containing proliferation. States observing this conflict may conclude that compliance with agreements is often a matter of perception, and that external actors may still resort to military force if threats are recognized despite formal commitments and diplomatic assurances. Conversely, states considering future negotiations may fear that concessions made today could be rendered meaningless by tomorrow’s geopolitical realignments. This erosion of trust undermines diplomatic tools that have historically underpinned nonproliferation efforts.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Over </span><a href="https://nolabels.org/the-latest/30-years-5-presidents-one-red-line-iran-cannot-get-a-nuclear-weapon/"><span data-contrast="none">three decades and six presidential administrations</span></a><span data-contrast="auto">, both Democratic and Republican, one fundamental national security principle has remained constant: The United States will not permit Iran to have a nuclear weapon under any circumstances.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Conversely, the war could hinder efforts to revive or renegotiate agreements with Iran and other nuclear-aspiring nations. Diplomatic efforts have been exhausted, and the political risks of making concessions have risen. Without credible negotiation pathways, countries may increasingly resort to unilateral actions, such as secretly advancing nuclear programs or emphasizing deterrence. Regarding Iran, the ruling elites, worn down by months of anti-regime strikes, are likely to delay denuclearization and other military restrictions.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">The Middle East has long been a region of latent nuclear potential. Several states possess advanced civilian nuclear infrastructures, and many have expressed interest in developing fuel</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">cycle capabilities. The conflict with Iran has intensified these dynamics by heightening perceptions of vulnerability. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt may interpret the conflict as evidence that regional security guarantees are unreliable.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">As a result, they or others may pursue nuclear hedging strategies by developing civilian programs that shorten the timeline for potential weapons development without overtly violating the NPT. Others  may </span><a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/saudi-arabia-nuclear-armed-pakistan-sign-mutual-defence-pact-2025-09-17/"><span data-contrast="none">sign mutual defense pacts</span></a><span data-contrast="auto"> with other nuclear-armed states. This hedging behavior could trigger a proliferation cascade, in which each state’s actions prompt others to follow suit.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">If multiple states in the region begin to pursue nuclear latency or weapons capabilities, the Middle East could become the world’s most volatile nuclear arena. <p><span data-contrast="auto">The conflict with Iran erupted amid intensifying competition among the United States, China, and Russia for international preeminence. These powers have distinct strategic interests in the Middle East and can use nuclear diplomacy as a tool of influence. Their rivalry and differing interests complicate efforts to build consensus on nonproliferation issues, including the ultimate determination about the status of Iran’s nuclear program.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Great</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">power divisions have already weakened the effectiveness of institutions such as the UN Security Council. When major powers cannot agree on enforcement measures, sanctions, or diplomatic strategies, the credibility of the nonproliferation regime suffers. The war has amplified these divisions, making coordinated responses more difficult. As great</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">power competition intensifies and long</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">standing norms, such as the taboo against nuclear proliferation, may weaken. <p><span data-contrast="auto">War creates conditions that undermine the ability of the IAEA and other bodies to monitor nuclear activities. Inspectors may lose access to facilities, satellite imagery may be obscured by conflict, and supply chains for nuclear materials may become harder to track. Conflict zones are fertile ground for illicit networks seeking nuclear materials.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">In some cases, the breakdown of state authority increases the risk that sensitive technologies or materials could be diverted, stolen, or sold on the black market. Sanctions on regimes depend on stable political conditions and international cooperation. <p><span data-contrast="auto">In contrast to the above, major conflicts have sometimes encouraged breakthroughs in arms control. The Cuban Missile Crisis led to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty; the Cold War produced the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks and other reduction treaties. The war in Iran may similarly prompt a reassessment of existing frameworks. The conflict could motivate states to explore new regional security architectures, such as a Middle East nuclear</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">weapons</span>‑<span data-contrast="auto">free zone, or enhanced transparency measures.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Although politically challenging, such initiatives could reduce pressures to proliferate. <p><span data-contrast="auto">The war in Iran has brought the global nonproliferation regime to a crossroads. One path leads toward fragmentation: weakened norms, regional arms races, and diminished trust in diplomacy. The other path, albeit politically challenging, offers the possibility of progress with new agreements, modernized verification tools, and renewed commitment to cooperative security. Which path the international community ultimately follows will depend on states&#8217; willingness to learn from the conflict and recognize that nuclear stability cannot be taken for granted. If the wider postwar Middle Eastern political alignments sought by the Trump administration comes to pass, including a lasting rapprochement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, the nonproliferation regime may be a beneficiary from reduced regional political toxicity and increased regional military cooperation.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nuclear devices in space have the potential to prove indispensable tools, ideal for <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/ostp-neo-strategy-action-plan-jun18.pdf">protecting the planet from asteroid impacts</a>. They are, however, currently forbidden, unless the 1967 <a href="https://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/ourwork/spacelaw/treaties/introouterspacetreaty.html">Outer Space Treaty</a> is properly amended. This is because they are viewed as destructive weapons of war.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/sep/23/nuclear-blast-could-save-earth-from-large-asteroid">Recent scientific research</a> at <a href="https://www.sandia.gov/">Sandia National Laboratories</a> proves that carefully aimed nuclear detonations in space, early enough in an object’s approach to Earth, can deflect a threatening comet or asteroid by enough to put it on a safe trajectory. The idea is not to try to pulverize the object by a direct hit, which might still shower Earth with debris. Rather, by detonating the warhead at a modest distance from the object, the forceful ablation (evaporation) of one side of its surface, induced by the intense X-ray of a nuclear detonation, would cause the entire object to move away from the detonation.</p>
<p>This would be an example of what has been called a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peaceful_nuclear_explosion">peaceful nuclear explosion</a> (PNE). Back in the early Cold War, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Atomic_Energy_Commission">US Atomic Energy Commission</a> looked into potential applications of nuclear detonations for peaceful civil engineering purposes. These included digging canals, creating harbors, and moving mountains. And yes, fallout was expected, which is why these terrestrial applications were abandoned. An underground nuclear blast was also tested as a way to extract natural gas, by creating in some geologically promising area a subterranean cavity that could then be tapped. The test was not a success because the natural gas was radioactive.</p>
<p>Later, <a href="https://www.atomicarchive.com/history/cold-war/page-17.html">India’s first successful nuclear test</a> (1974) was announced as a peaceful nuclear explosion, for oil extraction and mining purposes, not a weapon test. Then, in 1976, the U.S. and the USSR signed the <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=peaceful+nuclear+explosions+treaty&amp;oq=peacefyul+nucle&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqCQgCEAAYDRiABDIGCAAQRRg5MgkIARAAGA0YgAQyCQgCEAAYDRiABDIJCAMQABgNGIAEMgkIBBAAGA0YgAQyCAgFEAAYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjIICAcQABgWGB4yCAgIEAAYFhgeMggICRAAGBYYHtIBCDU1MDZqMGo3qAIAsAIA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8">Peaceful Nuclear Explosions Treaty</a>, which permitted such blasts anywhere on Earth if the host country gave permission. Thus, there is some precedent for the use of nuclear devices for peaceful purposes.</p>
<p>Certainly, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Asteroids-Greed-Determine-Future-Space/dp/B0958H3F4H/ref=sr_1_1?crid=C4LYU6HIOE8N&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9._Uw3vaUBVAU3Lk4LqIyeHg.jgvvSlwSOon9qLR6nIRObOyV-6tM15I8jmrPuTfuITc&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=asteroids%2C+martin+elvis&amp;qid=1728247611&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=asteroids%2C+martin+elvis%2Cstripbooks%2C144&amp;sr=1-1">non-nuclear methods</a> for diverting menacing space objects are possible. For instance, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) test-demonstration <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Asteroids-Greed-Determine-Future-Space/dp/B0958H3F4H/ref=sr_1_1?crid=C4LYU6HIOE8N&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9._Uw3vaUBVAU3Lk4LqIyeHg.jgvvSlwSOon9qLR6nIRObOyV-6tM15I8jmrPuTfuITc&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=asteroids%2C+martin+elvis&amp;qid=1728247611&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=asteroids%2C+martin+elvis%2Cstripbooks%2C144&amp;sr=1-1">DART</a> high-velocity inert impactor mission was successful. But the object whose orbit was changed slightly was a very small moonlet of a slightly less-small asteroid. Other techniques being studied include attaching rocket motors to a threatening object or moving it aside via space tugs deploying giant nets. Such motors or tugs could be driven by chemical engines, or <a href="https://mitchellaerospacepower.org/maneuver-warfare-in-space-the-strategic-mandate-for-nuclear-propulsion/">non-explosive nuclear propulsion</a>, or solar power (either solar panels, or <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-supported-solar-sail-could-take-science-to-new-heights/">light sails</a>).</p>
<p>These latter techniques are years or decades away from meaningful deployment. Due to their lower <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/specific-energy">specific energy</a> compared to a PNE, they would need for the inbound object to be detected very early and to be comparatively small.</p>
<p>For the largest potential Earth-bound objects, especially those coming from sunward, which can make them hard to detect very early, peaceful nuclear explosions might be an essential diversion method.</p>
<p>Obviously, such use of nuclear devices, well away from any people living on Earth or in space, would be for the benefit of mankind. However, nuclear devices can also be deadly weapons of war. They are indeed being looked at by America’s adversaries for purposes of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Reversing-Tao-Framework-Credible-Deterrence/dp/1533276137/ref=sr_1_1?crid=KGIZVOXF7T7J&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bIF-DloERS7RoZuaDfO8uA.b2gZYR7J2FWSsWvU0wj4q22kiE49OUJv4dz_JPtT8Cc&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=christopher+stone%2C+reversing+the+tao&amp;qid=1728248581&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=christopher+stone%2C+reversing+the+tao%2Cstripbooks%2C104&amp;sr=1-1">space-based coercion and blackmail</a> and even <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Space-Warfare-Strategy-Principles-Politics/dp/1032589175/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2KCJ7CZ37LB92&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.qYxAPn62ZZW7UY4dEyk82OS0XKcVc89rT19OQpZ5-TzpCcpdeiRtrfD3g3ZEhKRiIJJCDdo44Q_56GmEdGCHZw.f0TXr3YkEN2-MvAkWe3yH_WGbQHRCWsOKirSM4erziE&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=John+Klein%2C+space+warfare&amp;qid=1728248728&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=john+klein%2C+space+warfare%2Cstripbooks%2C241&amp;sr=1-1">warfighting in space</a>. Examples include Russia’s “<a href="https://globalsecurityreview.com/to-deter-in-space-the-us-needs-on-orbit-parity/">Sputnuke</a>” and China’s <a href="https://www.heritage.org/defense/report/nuclear-posture-review-the-next-administration-building-the-nuclear-arsenal-the-21st">fractional orbital bombardment system</a>. Effective strategic deterrence thus continues to require American preparedness and vigilance, throughout the cislunar and beyond the Moon.</p>
<p>However, nuclear explosives in space are truly a dual-use technology. There are already copious amounts of natural hard radiation throughout the solar system. An asteroid- or comet-moving PNE blast’s fallout would dissipate relatively harmlessly.</p>
<p>PNEs in space raise troubling but pressing questions about the need to rethink and update the <a href="https://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/ourwork/spacelaw/treaties/introouterspacetreaty.html">Outer Space Treaty</a>, since it prohibits placing any nuclear devices anywhere in space. On the one hand, all nuclear weapons based on-orbit should continue to be forbidden. But on the other hand, the same warheads used to defend Earth against space rocks simply must be allowed.</p>
<p>This might be achieved in one of two ways. One is to create a “Planetary Defense Guard” under the auspices of the UN, with the necessary nuclear devices put under UN Security Council control. However, the UN does not have a record of success regarding cooperative use of nuclear devices. A proposed plan in the early Cold War called for all nuclear arms to be pooled under central UN control. It went nowhere. The modern UN attempt at a <a href="https://disarmament.unoda.org/wmd/nuclear/tpnw/">treaty</a> banning all nuclear devices everywhere (including PNEs) is also going nowhere, for the same reason. States owning nuclear warheads have no desire to give them up.</p>
<p>The other way to get the protection Earth requires is to recognize that planetary defense is a necessary and unavoidable aspect of the “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scramble-Skies-Competition-Control-Resources/dp/149858313X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3CSRJ7S0UWQ8P&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.kQpyx5n7AdSbZ-zRj07jErgQrObo5PVSBT-Nrvp6t0wxUYujq6jWPKZUwkc9t7lnL95Tjo1jjDxD88OG740Wh8BT4ghS4hHFV3u9sdiPxi-l93Xmove-VFVK3srr704WU9o0gA90zKRoPCfj6gc68tui-fFecgN8_3XRglGhu0XSj73wNKjLPt8QXuDAOCxywPTygfrDAejXzmax8DTvIwnRLSrFT6huioiVxUwSNZU.kbEuY3U804Y6KQ6epmYcpjzI4JgofGOe3yrdgqDi6a4&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=scramble+for+the+skies&amp;qid=1728249341&amp;sprefix=scramble+for+the+skies%2Caps%2C170&amp;sr=8-1">Scramble for the Skies</a>” now emerging. In this alternate scheme, rival powers compete using nuclear devices in a peaceful way for space-based civil engineering purposes. They vie to develop the best suite of proprietary systems, procedures, and technologies for deflecting Earth impactors via peaceful nuclear explosions. They could then also “race” to launch them whenever actually needed. Such healthy competition might significantly increase the odds of at least one contender making a successful diversion, while letting all contenders participate in this ultimate “space Olympic decathlon.”</p>
<p>Changing the OST out of sheer necessity, to allow PNEs for planetary defense, would have several very significant societal benefits. It would more rapidly and effectively advance humanity’s space defenses. It would urgently accelerate everything needed for the successful <a href="https://globalsecurityreview.com/japans-ministry-of-defense-opening-space-security-to-the-commercial-sector/">commercialization</a>, industrialization, and <a href="https://nss.org/settlement/nasa/75SummerStudy/Chapt.1.html">colonization of space</a>, which <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1984881728/?bestFormat=true&amp;k=a%20city%20on%20mars&amp;ref_=nb_sb_ss_w_scx-ent-pd-bk-d_de_k0_1_7&amp;crid=2MKKLCJB4OA5D&amp;sprefix=a%20city%20">advocates say</a> could take pressure off Earth’s <a href="https://www.defense.gov/spotlights/tackling-the-climate-crisis/">endangered environment</a>, too.</p>
<p>Allowing PNEs in space would also give spacefaring nuclear powers a way to stay within <a href="https://www.cfr.org/timeline/us-russia-nuclear-arms-control">Cold War–style safety guardrails</a> against nuclear crises and nuclear war. It would allow them to instead compete to show their culture’s and their government’s superiority through the peaceful, beneficial harnessing of both spaceflight and nuclear energy. Such a grand competitive program would help address <a href="https://www.sciencenews.org/article/threats-civilization-survival-humanity-apocalypse">three existential threats to the human race</a> at once, three possible extermination events: a large asteroid strike, a climate catastrophe, and a nuclear holocaust.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Afghanistan, under Taliban control, is a powder keg ready to erupt with consequences that will ripple throughout the region and the world. The driving forces of this impending disaster are deeply rooted in the Taliban’s ideological, strategic, and operational maneuvers, which intensified after the American exit.</p>
<p>The brainwashing of youths, monopoly over illicit drug production, sheltering and supporting global terrorist groups, weaponization of poverty, and recruitment of refugees has brought Afghanistan to the verge of an imminent explosion, with consequences that may prove more consequential than those of September 11, 2001. Understanding what the Taliban is doing deserves further explanation.</p>
<p><strong>Brainwashing the Youth</strong></p>
<p>The Taliban’s focus on educating Afghan youth in religious schools (madrasa), which serve as training centers for militants and suicide bombers, poses an immediate and long-term threat to the region and the West. Through relentless brainwashing, these madrasas create a generation of children and teenagers steeped in radicalism. Young recruits are taught that martyrdom and suicide attacks are not only honorable but also necessary.</p>
<p>What makes this particularly worrisome is the sheer scale. Tens of thousands of young minds are being primed for violence, and this army of youths will be deployed somewhere. The consequences for neighboring countries and the West, which are already struggling with radicalization, could be catastrophic. As Roza Otenbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), <a href="https://8am.media/fa/deadly-poverty-and-cost-of-resources-for-the-growth-of-terrorism-world-bank-the-future-of-afghanistans-economy-is-dark/">said</a> to the UN Security Council, “The Taliban do not allow any monitoring of these schools and we don’t know what they teach there.”</p>
<p>According to the Taliban Ministry of Education, at least <a href="https://www.etilaatroz.com/208655/%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3%D9%87-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%AA%D9%84%D9%82%DB%8C%D9%86-%D8%AE%D8%B4%D9%88%D9%86%D8%AA/">17,300 madrasas</a> are officially active across Afghanistan. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.etilaatroz.com/208655/%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3%D9%87-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%AA%D9%84%D9%82%DB%8C%D9%86-%D8%AE%D8%B4%D9%88%D9%86%D8%AA/">according to an order</a> issued by the Taliban on June 20, 2022, three to 10 jihadi schools, with a capacity of 500–1,000 students each, are being built in every district of Afghanistan. Afghanistan has 408 districts, and the construction of three to 10 new jihadi schools per district could quickly turn the country into the center of global terrorism.</p>
<p><strong>Safe Haven for Terrorist Groups</strong></p>
<p>Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, is once again a haven for international terrorist groups. The Taliban’s victory emboldened and empowered extremist groups, providing them with the space to reorganize, train, and plan. Groups such as al-Qaeda, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) now operate freely inside Afghanistan. Taliban ties with these terrorist groups are not superficial. They are rooted in common ideology, long-term political interests, and, most importantly, many Taliban leaders have long-standing family ties with the leaders of these groups.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://8am.media/fa/taliban-hosting-terrorist-groups-building-four-settlements-for-al-qaeda-and-ttp">report</a> in <em>Hasht-e-Subh</em>, the Taliban are building well-equipped bases with residential houses for the Al-Qaeda network and Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan in Ghazni province. Likewise, UN reports, especially the July 2024 report, are proof of this claim. The United Nations says Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, is a “<a href="https://digitallibrary.un.org/record/4053880?ln=en&amp;_gl=1*jziwl9*_ga*MTg4MTg3MTYwMy4xNjkzMTIwNjQx*_ga_TK9BQL5X7Z*MTcyMDc2Mzg2Mi42OC4xLjE3MjA3NjM5MjguMC4wLjA.&amp;v=pdf#files">safe haven</a>” for groups such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS. This network of relationships ensures that the Taliban will continue to cooperate with these groups in their collective efforts to destabilize the region, expand influence, and export terror globally, creating a security disaster with devastating global consequences.</p>
<p><strong>Drug Monopoly</strong></p>
<p>Although the Taliban officially banned the cultivation and trafficking of narcotics, it has monopolized the industry. By limiting the supply, the Taliban is driving up the price of drugs, making the trade more profitable for themselves and their affiliates. As noted in the July 2024 UN Security Council report, it is still too early to assess the full impact of the poppy cultivation ban. However, senior Taliban officials oppose the ban. Poppy farmers lose while the Taliban profits. The report states, “Due to poppy stockpiles, the drug trade in Afghanistan remains significant.”</p>
<p>The world’s lack of attention to this development risks creating an underground drug economy, further empowering the Taliban and their allied terrorist groups—undermining security and stability in Afghanistan and the region. As the Taliban’s drug empire expands, terrorist groups will increasingly benefit.</p>
<p><strong>Weaponization of Poverty</strong></p>
<p>One of the most dangerous strategies used by the Taliban is the deliberate impoverishment of the Afghan people. By doing this, they pursue two goals.</p>
<p>First, they plunge a large portion of the population into extreme poverty and eliminate opportunities for education, employment, and basic survival. This makes it easier to recruit people into their ranks and allied terrorist groups.</p>
<p>Second, the Taliban’s control over local resources and their monopoly on illicit trade provides ample financial incentives for those willing to fight for them. In this way, poverty becomes a weapon and fuels rebellion and radicalism.</p>
<p><strong>Recruitm</strong><strong>ent of Deported Asylum Seekers</strong></p>
<p>The Taliban encourages the deportation of Afghan refugees by secretly cooperating with some countries, particularly those in the region. This is a policy that is of strategic importance to the regime.</p>
<p>Many deported Afghans, returning to the land where they find no means of survival, are easily recruited by the Taliban and allied terrorist groups. Deportation is vital for the Taliban, as it ensures a steady stream of disillusioned and frustrated individuals who become pawns in their larger scheme.</p>
<p>Many countries fail to grasp the significance of this issue and view it superficially. Deporting immigrants, especially from Western countries, fuels anti-Western sentiments among the population, making them susceptible to serving terrorist groups.</p>
<p><strong>Time Is Running Out</strong></p>
<p>If the world continues to ignore the dire situation in Afghanistan, the consequences will soon prove irreparable. The brainwashing of the nation’s youth, Taliban drug running, safe havens for terrorists, the weaponization of poverty, and the recruitment of refugees will soon impact Afghanistan’s neighbors and the West. Afghanistan’s neighbors, Pakistan, Iran, Central Asia, and India, will suffer the most, but the impact will not be limited to the region. Countries far beyond, especially in the West, will be in the crosshairs of these repercussions.</p>
<p>The American withdrawal from Afghanistan was a serious miscalculation. The Biden administration, particularly Jake Sullivan, believes that drones and aerial surveillance can control the situation. This reflects a strategic mistake reminiscent of America’s approach during the Cold War. Ultimately, that mistaken view contributed to the rise of international terrorism and the attacks of September 11, 2001. Abandoning the Afghan people once again will prove catastrophic, especially the West.</p>
<p>As an Afghan, I urge the West to pay attention and ensure that the Afghanistan that led to 9/11 does not become the same Afghanistan of the near future. It may be a landlocked country in Central Asia, but Afghanistan has already proved that it can cause great harm when left to its own devises.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recent action by the United States and like-minded nations to defend Israel from an unprecedented Iranian airstrike demonstrates how the United States and NATO can defend their allies and partners against similar air threats. With a 99 percent success rate in downing Iranian ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and long-range attack drones, this should serve as an indicator of how NATO can support the defense of Ukrainian critical infrastructure, for example. The use of a diverse mix of air defense ships and aircraft, as part of providing an advanced integrated air and missile defense shield for Israel, offers valuable lessons for future endeavors.</p>
<p>The lessons from this experience are numerous. First, American and coalition air defenses performed marvelously in the <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/opinion-five-considerations-after-iran-s-attack-on-israel/ar-BB1lEOla">political act of coordinating multiple nations</a> in the defense of Israel. This required working out the logistical issues prior to taking a defensive posture ahead of time.</p>
<p>Second, the response proved the maturity of ballistic missile defenses. Israel’s Iron Dome (and other defenses), American SM-3s, and coalition systems were excellent. It was a practical demonstration of the technical improvements in air and missile defenses.</p>
<p>Third, the response was a demonstration of successful intelligence integration. Coordinating intelligence among coalition partners is never easy, but as the coalition response proved, it is possible.</p>
<p>Fourth, coalition members took full advantage of the geography and time provided by Iranian air strike. With the coalition expecting a response, they had the time needed to prepare for an attack. Moreover, due to the distances the cruise missiles and drones had to traverse, coalition defenders could best posture themselves at the optimal locations to intercept inbound weapons.</p>
<p>However, there are also negative lessons to learn from the coalition’s response to Iran’s attack. First, the response was expensive. At least <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2968223/navy-down-1-billion-munitions-has-fended-off-130-direct-attacks-six-months/">$1 billion was spent to defend Israel</a> from Iranian and Houthi attacks. Israel <a href="https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/israel-iran-strikes-live-coverage/card/israel-s-cost-of-intercepting-iranian-barrage-is-put-at-over-550-million-uamrOjZkoRBNGRfjWbD6">spent half a billion dollars</a> to defend against this single attack.  Such expenditures are unsustainable. While this captures the immediate costs, more time is needed to determine the long-term/opportunity costs.</p>
<p>Second, the United States is continuing to deplete limited stocks of expensive and exquisite missile systems against relatively cheaper Iranian weapons. The US and coalition must reverse this exhaustion strategy.</p>
<p>The variation in responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s attack on Israel certainly create difficult political questions. Taiwan, for example, may look at its own situation and see this varied response as politically problematic for itself. Fears of escalation against a nuclear power are logical, but to defeat any of these nations equates to extinction. Defending these democratic nations’ right to exist is in the United States’ and NATO’s interest.</p>
<p>The United States does not, however, have the luxury of time in preparing for future Russian or Chinese attacks on Ukraine or Taiwan. Any attack will also see far more sophisticated weaponry than that employed by Iran. Thus, defending Ukraine and Taiwan requires persistent forces ready to defend these nations.</p>
<p>If the United States, NATO, and other American allies are committed to defending democracies like Ukraine and Taiwan, there are three moves the United States should make. First, it must take proactive and deliberate actions. It could include establishing defensive zones around critical infrastructure and civilian population centers. This includes combined land- and sea-based defenses for shooting down air attacks. The goal is to protect civilians and critical infrastructure against indiscriminate attacks.</p>
<p>Second, the United States should accelerate investments in inexpensive weapon systems.  Providing more inexpensive air defenses allows for sustained defense. Focusing on capabilities that disrupt adversary surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting systems along with electronic warfare effort should serve as a central focus. The US and NATO must counter the exhaustion strategy employed by Russia, China, and Iran.</p>
<p>Third, the United States and its allies should enhance their partnership by further exchanging lessons learned, innovative ideas, and best practices for defending against evolving attacks. Reducing bureaucratic obstacles that limit ally and partner access to critical air defenses is part of that effort.</p>
<p>The reasons for doing this are simple and best summarized in four points. First, it is important to improve American credibility. Nothing will aid American deterrence efforts more. There is ample reason to argue that Ukraine and Taiwan should receive the same support as Israel. All are fighting for their nations as enemies vow to destroy them. Thus, the US and NATO must do more to protect democratic nations.</p>
<p>Second, for the sake of deterrence, demonstrating to adversaries that the United States will not allow air strikes on democratic nations is important. Establishing protective cover with American and NATO forces can act as a deterrent that drives tensions down. The “responsibility to protect” concept is useful in deterring Russia, China, and/or Iran from attacking the infrastructure and citizenry of democratic states. There is always a risk of escalation by intervening, however. The risk of defeat and the elimination of democratic states by authoritarian regimes would, however, do irreparable harm to the United States’ standing in the world.</p>
<p>Third, there is value in creating and enforcing international norms. Even though Russia and China would veto any UN Security Council resolution supporting the defense of Ukraine or Taiwan, establishing such norms is worth the effort.</p>
<p>Fourth, the United States must defend democracy and freedom. Many nations are looking at both Western democracies and Eastern authoritarians to determine which path to follow. It is in the United States’ interest for them to take the democratic path.</p>
<p>It is time for the West to take a stand. While Americans may not seek war, authoritarian adversaries often believe that war is their best option for reshaping the world in their own image. The United States and some NATO member states demonstrated the means and will to defend Israel against Iranian air attack. Providing a similar defense to Ukraine and Taiwan certainly deserves further consideration if the United States aspires to continue leading the free world. Abrogating that position would be a mistake. It is now time for the US and NATO to take more risks in supporting friends in their hour of need.</p>
